Dave - love the analysis. As usual, very thorough and helpful. I also particularly like your point on services as I believe that, well-executed, a good service model can provide healthy revenue streams and increase customer satisfaction.

Beyond the business model and the numbers, I also think that Splunk has some great marketing practices that many similar companies should observe. One could argue that splunk's business is not that sexy. Yet, they manage to make their differentiation clear through clever marketing. I love how they put their customer stories ahead of the product - see what they did with Vodafone or Macys.com for example. Would love your opinion on that.

Also, I'm surprised that you haven't written a similar post on Facebook's S1...what are your thoughts there? :)

Best,
Bruno

Wow. That was a great post! Thanks for the insight...it will help. Amazing that the company / brand isn't as well-known in the DC market unless you are in the same tech circles or IC. I'd still love to see a follow-up post...the playing field looks like it's changing again at least here in DC.

Excellent article!

I recall a meeting with the owners of a company where my account manager had a fifteen minutes "shot" in which he squeezed all the buzzwords he knew about a new product with the speed of machine-gun.

When he finished, the CEO gave him a friendly smile(today I think it was an evil grin) and then asked me(the Sales Engineer) to repeat what had been said in "much less words" using a vocabulary that they could understand.

Thanks
